A couple of ya asked me how the trip went, so I thought I'd send this out to everyone.
![]() Left to Right: House, Mr. Beer, Stacey, Dave B. Those who went where: yours truly, Mr. Beer, Dave B. & Tiffany (nice meeting her), Stacey, and Mike-D. The trip went well; I had a really good time. Here's my quick summary of the night: First stop was the Oaken Barrel. Most of their beer was really light and watery, definitely lacked character. I thought the raspberry Weiss was like drinking candy-flavored soda pop. I'm pretty sure they just use raspberry extract for flavoring. Their only stand out was the Super Fly IPA. ![]() House @ Oaken Barrel Alcatraz: I thought all their beers were very clean but not very distinct; I'm pretty sure they use the same yeast for all their beers. Which isn't bad, it just didn't work for some of the styles i.e. the wheat. I was especially impressed with the service. Most everyone at the table ordered a sampler and the waiter spent about 5 or 6 minutes walking us through each one. The guy didn't know jack about the beer outside of his schpeal, but I was impressed none-the-less. Their best beer was their brown ale. I think the highlight of the night was the waiter trying to convince us that the Slammer was 13% ABV. We later found out that it was 7.23%. It would have been damn impressive if they did have a well-done high gravity beer. ![]() The Group at Alcatraz (Left to Right) House, Mr. Beer, Stacey, Dave B., Tiffany K., and 1/4 of Mike-D.

We then went to the Ram but couldn't find a seat so we left. We then went to BW3's for dinner (25% off food). I was super impressed
with their draft selection. I would highly recommend that place for good
beer. We were running short on time so we ended up skipping the Rock Bottom. On to Broad Ripple brewery, I liked their ESB and engine pulled porter. Then we ended the night with the Brugge Brassier (Tiffany corrected me on the pronunciation more than once). I was really keeping my fingers crossed that they still had their triple, but they were completely out of both the triple and pale ale! They had Wit, Pilsner and their Belgian strong dark on draft. Their Belgian strong was decent but nothing too notable. The pils was unimpressive (though really cool that they made a pils) and the Wit was a bit huskey/astringent, not enough orange and way too much coriander and grains of paradise, but some might like that spice profile. I thought I'd treat the guys (the ones still drinking) to a big bottle of Hanssens' Oude Gueuze. It was funny seeing everyone's reactions to the first taste. It was super tart, moderate funk, and very enjoyable. We headed back home around 1:15am. Dave B. and Stacy were taking some pictures throughout the night so we should get some pics from them to put up on the site. And thank you Mr. Beer and Dave B. for filling in the captain's seat. Ryan. |
